hooray for fun weekend!

Hooray for a fun weekend :)

Friday night, Brett [livejournal.com profile] zip4096 and I went for Thai food and to the The Books show at the Earl, and that was lovely, as predicted. I enjoyed the opening band as well -- The Grizzly Bears. They played like this ambient, occasionally mournful but mostly rolling-along sort of rock music, and their bassist played their whole set on his knees! (and occasionally put down his bass and picked up a flute, and later a clarinet, and later still, sort of howled into what looked like the microphone for a CB radio). And The Books are great, and I think most of you would enjoy them -- it's two guys with a cello and a guitar (and sometimes they both pick up 'lectric basses) and samples and video and it's not really like anything else in particular, but in a thoughtful, non-abrasive sort of way.

At the end of the show, the guitarist had the biggest, most innocent smile on his face, and he was making smoke rings with a thing made out of some plungers and widgets and the horn from an old phonograph, and they were perfect. And the tour manager told a funny story about looking through thrift stores for weird old videos with the guys from the band. It was great.

... so Graham [livejournal.com profile] cola_fan and Luke [livejournal.com profile] yourusername hosted a N'awlins-style crawdad boil, and lots of people that were like one or two social hops away from me were there, and it was entertaining. A highlight of the evening was watching Beckham [livejournal.com profile] leftorium playing with a small child, trying to teach him to do math in his head. Marbles was played. Also some Go. And some music -- Tracy [livejournal.com profile] rosindust was there, and she violin'd a little bit, and she and Amanda [livejournal.com profile] neurochemistry and Graham are apparently working on a musical. And many other fun and exciting things happened besides, and people ate a lot of my Probably Delicious Definitely Veggie Jambalaya Concoction With Okra, so I didn't have to bring that much of it back with me.

... and Martin organized a lovely expedition out to Piedmont Park, and great number of people including B-UNIT [livejournal.com profile] zip4096 and Gregg [livejournal.com profile] gtv42 and Kati [livejournal.com profile] verucalane and her crew and Whitney [livejournal.com profile] elysianboarder and Mike [livejournal.com profile] yourusername and this Emily character whom I hadn't met before and Marcus and his tiny tiny daughter Zoe were there, and we ran around in the sunshine and flew kites and juggled and threw frisbees and ate fruit, and verily, it was pretty awesome.
We might just have to do the Kite Party as a recurring thing.

And now, after all that fun, I should do work or sleep. Or one then the other.
