That was a happy evening :)

I'd been hanging around, trying to get Tallahassee people on the phone, trying to think of other people to call, trying to think of what it was that I used to do while living in Tallahassee for all those 18 years, and I ended up heading out to the Black Dog Cafe, which is out at Lake Ella, near the middle of town. Normally, that's where all the cool kids hang out, so I thought I'd see if anybody was there.

... and I ended up running into half of the population of recent Maclay graduates, so that was a happy occurrence :) As soon as I headed up to the counter to get coffee and a muffin, there was Garrett, and soon thereafter, in popped Brent, closely followed by Alex M. and Jessika and a troupe of their friends. And then, not long after, much to my surprise, in sauntered Brooks and Blake, whom I hadn't seen in years. They both had hair down to their shoulders and beards, so it took me a moment to recognize them... Brooks especially. Rumour had had it that he was Huge, and I can confirm this -- he's really buff now.

So for everybody who cares, here's the stuff I picked up about Maclay folks:
super-important updates about Tallahassee people you don't know )

... I suppose that was mostly so I can remember all that stuff, in years to come. That may or may not have been at all interesting to you.

Hrum. Yeah :) So I saw some old friends tonight, which was lovely. Just exactly what I needed to do :)

For the earlier part of today, I went and ran in the forest and then went to the gym for a little bit, and in the afternoon, I went ahead an put FreeDOS on treebeard, blowing away his earlier redhat install, to which I wasn't at all attached because it was redhat. FreeDOS is hilarious... it's ... so DOS. It's an odd feeling, going back to an emphatically single-tasking OS. It feels so fragile... it's so easy to crash. Everything just falls apart if a single program screws up or doesn't find things how it expects them... and the whole system is sitting there waiting on your every keypress, and it often reads in input one character at a time -- no buffering or anything on the keyboard input. I suppose as far as DOS goes, it's a nice DOS :) It comes with this silly GUI, "seal", which doesn't google very well at all -- I think the first thing I found about it was some of the FreeDOS people complaining that the license for it wasn't Free enough... the source was available, but there were some restrictions or somesuch difficulties. I dunno if I'll keep FreeDOS around for any length of time... if I can make it play old DOS games, then I suppose that'll be enough reason to keep it around, but otherwise... it's just a pain, going back to DOS. Sort of makes me nostalgic for the Bad Old Days, but... eh, it's DOS. The installation was pretty easy :) Bootable CD, fairly self-explanatory interactive installer... it'd be good if the default install came with the TCP/IP programs, which are apparently ... at least available, if not easy to set up. I'm seeing Descent I/II and maybe Heretic or Duke Nukem or Commander Keen or Sam & Max running on this thing... and if I get bored or frustrated with it, I suppose I can always just blow away FreeDOS and give plan9 another go :) Maybe it's time to pull out cirdan (the sparcstation II, given to me by the great David Cantrell) again...

... well, no. Now, it's time to sleep.
