wee update
Dec. 20th, 2003 02:13 amLife is so cool... I've been so fortunate to come across really good people, in my lifetime. I've been hanging out with my friends here in Tallahassee, and it's just lovely. Tonight, I met up with a bunch of associates for Marko
wangosuave's birthday at Village Pizza... Lloyd, Garrett and Brett were there as well, and perhaps most interestingly (just in that I hadn't seen him in about forever), there was Michael Hasper, with whom I hadn't spoken in at least a year and probably hadn't seen in person for several...
It was so good to see him... he's still himself, but he feels and looks... older (fancy that)... he's been off at Stanford, working on a double-major in Neurobiology and Economics. Absolutely absurd, but then he's always been the sort of person that does the sort of thing that's just freakishly over-achiever-like, and we all love him :) It sounds like he's been doing really well. There's not much to be said about this, but it brings up the issue of keeping in touch with people you used to see more often... that's always a weird subject...
... and I might just casually leap over it right now. But I saw Brett's place tonight, and we hung out for a while and talked about stuff and watched the OAF plays, which were really amazing... OAF (Organic Artists Forum) is so freaking cool -- it's this big group of creative people at FSU, and they get together and talk about interesting stuff, and they produced these really amazing plays that you should ask Brett about. He says he'll put them online in the nearish future. One of them (he was in it) was called "Everyone Knows Time Machines Are A Bad Idea", and it was great -- he played this scientist (you know, sort of a generic scientist in a lab coat) who invented a Time Machine so he could get more comic books (the only thing he cared about -- even more than money, his tenure track, and women)... hilarious :) When they're available online, I'll link. OAF is a good thing.
Last night, Lloyd and myself were hanging out at Garrett's place, having one of these discussions in which we find out that Lloyd is very well versed in Western-ish philosophy (he's a Philosophy major, even) and Garrett's quite well-read when it comes to Buddhism, and they have all sorts of trouble with definitions whenever they go to attack any sort of ontological problem...
But I've noticed a few things coming out of this...
- Lloyd's gotten much more mathematically-minded as he gets older and better trained in formal logic... he makes math jokes now and uses set theory and variables to describe things (which is funny, because he'll call things A or t1, whereas I name things "Phyllis"). And he understood lambda bodies, when I went to describe them, and had an idea as to why they'd be useful...
- Garrett talking about Buddhism to a non-believer feels a lot like a Christian talking about Christianity... which is interesting, but I don't know what else to say about that, yet...
I should go to bed pretty soon, so I can get on a more normal-ish sleeping schedule...
Hrm. Peace out, and word to your mother.
