All sorts of stuff...
I'm home again, but everybody's asleep -- the maternal unit's got a final tomorrow (the last one, for this degree at least), so she went to bed fairly early... :)
I'm done for the semester... everything got wound down (funny how it's spelt the same way whether you mean "The wind-up toy got wound up" or "he has a gaping chest wound". Did you say "doing"?) more or less how I expected it to do -- all the regrading got regraded (done in a batch fashion, no less), all the finals were prepared-for/taken/proctored/graded, almost all the loose ends were tied up...
... but it felt kinda melancholy. Everybody's leaving. Well, not everybody. But a lot of people... and it's odd. But I suppose it's more odd for the people who're actually going somewhere. Like Chris V is headed off to California soon, and Stevie
sstrickl is goin' up to Northeastern to get his PhD and become Dr. Stevie... and Jennifer
vivianeq is leaving for Orlando and the Working World... and Kurt is headed for Canadia...
... and it's kind of upsetting, because I'd wanted to have a cool program to show him, at the end of our independent study. And it was pretty cool, but not quite finished -- like the last part that we were supposed to implement (the script-recognizing bits) weren't hacked up yet. But On The Other Hand, it ended up very nearly being a Team Project Done Entirely By The Rudnick. He understood, though... I wonder if it would seem too obsessive if I finished it in the next coupla days and emailed him some code.
I don't know what to do about not being a TA anymore. That's all done with, and I'm not signed up to TA anything for Summer or Fall (but in the case that I miss it, Bill said they'd have me back)... that probably got to be a bigger part of my identity than it should've been. But I'ma have to change my .sig...
There are some cool things:
- If you're driving down I75, south from Atlanta, and you mean to bypass Macon but forget, and then you're looking for something to eat and think that Subway might be nice... just north of Macon, there's an excellent little Greek restaurant right next to the Subway, and they have a super-tasty Vegetarian Combo Platter for like $5. The place is called Papolili's, and it's very much like The Pitaria (but smaller), for you Tallahassee folks who might be familiar.
- There are fireflies here, and they're going crazy! (this is perhaps nicer and more natural-feeling than Atlanta's eternal daytime with the 24-hour chirping birds at Tech)
- I get a week off, and I'ma commune with my people and my forest. The family is coming into town, for various reasons. My other associates should be about, I do believe...
- Goin' back to Tech for another round after that week -- this time, with lots of cool people moved into our building, and no Known-Suckful Classes, and a research job! Particularly, The Room (Apartment #2)
theroom is relocating into our building (although it was just in the next building over, before), and Lisa
pyrona is going to live right above us. And Richard
falun is moving in to apartment. Joy! :)
- Metareasoning.
Less-than-cool things:
- Lynyrd Skynyrd. Holy crap, have you heard this song "Red White and Blue"? *shakes head, sighs* They've certainly got the right to, y'know, Do Whatever, but... this is pretty well disgusting, from where I'm standing.
- Manufactured drama and artificial unhappiness. We can't let ourselves be happy. This applies to some of us moreso than others. If you think you stand for peace and love, damn well act out of love and try to be peaceful sometimes, internally and externally. That wasn't directed at anybody in particular. Just a general thought.
And those are the cool and not-cool things. But I'm home, and I'm going to go sleep soon. Or maybe read...
