Things that are interesting:

- People interacting with other people, particularly ones that they love. The look of concern on somebody's face when somebody else is sick... is a beautiful thing.

- Finding that you magically have a massive commonality and shared pool of inside jokes with someone you'd never met before... just because they happen to be dating one of your best friends from home. I officially approve of Janice, thus far :)

- Finding out that deep down inside, you really are a hateful bigot. Well, that's putting it a bit strongly. It sounds really weird saying it, but I realized recently that I have (suffer from) a bizarre grating-on-the-nerves when I'm around nerds... or at least a particular sort of nerd. It's hard to verbalize, exactly. But how hypocritical is that? I need to be nicer to people. Or at least not be so easily annoyed.

- How I didn't realize how interesting intrusion detection is, just from an AI/datamining standpoint... I had to review a paper about it, and not knowing much of anything about the topic, I went to go look at The Literature. And Tim [livejournal.com profile] neuroticmonk? That Wenke Lee fellow is wickedly clever, and his papers are well-written. Go take a Machine Learning class, Mr. Jackson -- you'd appreciate this stuff!

- Interactive fiction. Holy crap, Esther [livejournal.com profile] eponis. You'd appreciate this. I've also been looking into current AI research on this sort of thing, particularly the "drama management problem" -- it's basically like "if you're running a roleplaying game and you need the computer to be the GM, what do you do?" ... and then there are all sorts of interesting AI approaches to this, researched here at Ma Tech by one Dr. Michael Mateas, who just radiates cool.

- Time to do more productive things, hut!!
