This interpersonal reserve can be somewhat creepy. To put it fancifully, suppose you burst into my heterophenomenology lab to warn me that the building is on fire. I don't leap to my feet and head for the door; I write down, 'subject S believes the building is on fire'. 'No, really, it's on fire!' you insist, and I ask, 'Would you like to expand on that? What is it like for you to think the building is on fire?' and so forth. In one way I am taking you as seriously as you could ever hope to be taken, but in another way I am not. I am not assuming that you are right in what you tell me, but just that that is what you do believe.
