Busta Rhymes show review...
Oct. 22nd, 2005 10:17 pmLast night, Jacquie and I went to the Busta Rhymes show. We showed up at the Tabernacle, didn't have too much trouble finding parking, and then were given free tickets (!!) by the really nice guy at the box office. Hooray! We got there about 2 and a half hours after doors opened, and it seemed like the openers hadn't been going for that long.
The opening act was some people that I didn't recognize: a few MCs bouncing off of each other and also a young lady by the name of Miri Ben-Ari, who's apparently one of the world's few hip-hop violinists.
fluffyevilbunny: "Hey, she's the definitive hip-hop violinist."
Right-o. It was pretty cool, I suppose, but it wasn't all that exciting. They seemed like they were sort of going through the motions...
fluffyevilbunny: "It didn't make me want to pee my pants."
After not too long, and with a lot of fanfare, Busta came out. He's huge these days. I looked at pictures of him from the 90s, just to make sure this hadn't always been the case, but he's just jacked. He looks so comfortable in his body. He has a lot of majesty. And lots and lots of bling. And he's still pretty frenetic. There wasn't a lot of Flipmode Squad around -- just Spliff Star and the DJ, and Spliff honestly wasn't that exciting... he seemed more like random sidekick for Busta, underscored by how much bigger Mr. Rhymes was...
The show was pretty cool. I was glad we went. But Busta kept interrupting his own songs, kept demanding (at length) that everybody get up and wave their hands in the air... it would've been better if he'd just let everybody "watch me get down and just do my thing, baby" (B. Rhymes 1996), but the interruptions were pretty jarring, and they kept changing the lights around. *shrugs* It was pretty funny when he enumerated possible reasons for the audience not remembering the words to his songs.
fluffyevilbunny: "Apparently his tour manager isn't letting him smoke pot..."
He did seem pretty upset about that. *sighs* It might have something to do with the tour being sponsored by a cigarette company which shall remain nameless.
He might have been more interesting when he was younger and didn't take himself so seriously and hang out with Dr. Dre. I was expecting bizarre costumes and more Flipmode members and... sort of a more put-together show. This seemed kinda haphazard.
