So I've been teaching summer camps, right? And for the past few weeks, I've been teaching summer workshop things for high school teachers! Just wanted to make this clear.

Last week, we finished up a two-week session for beginners -- like people who hadn't programmed much before (if at all) and are about to have to get up in front of a room of students and work their way through a school year... and it was great, and we all bonded, and I learned almost everybody's name and they were super-sweet and appreciative and got me a nice card, aw :)

This week, we've been doing the intermediate class, like for people who have a pretty good idea what's up, and that's refreshing! Because they have a pretty good idea what's up! Some of them have been professional programmers in industry, even, and most of them already know at least one or two other languages (if not Java particularly)... only one of them wanted to come to the Optional Evening Session, so Ray and I hung out and chatted and built a little robot out of legos. He's from Texas, and just got his CS degree last year, and he's a little concerned about Barbara telling everybody that the job market for computer science has a supply gap -- he's trying out the teaching gig in part because he couldn't find a decent programmer job.

It's a little sad, because I probably won't bond with this group near as much; they're gone 'til next Thursday.

But tonight, Martin and Martin's friend Sean (from Work) went out on an awesome bike ride, out around downtown, Cabbagetown, and the Grant Park area. Sean got a flat tire coming back, so we had to walk for a while. But it was cool. Sean's a real hip cat; he's writing a MUD for fun; he knows a lot about Genetic Algorithms; he knows obscure media things; he does Civil War Reenactment. Also: he seems like a genuinely kind dude. And we all went to Manuel's Tavern, which has delicious root beer!

Yay for delicious root beer!

And that is my story for today. Oh! Also, my legs are still sore because I ran all the way from the house out to Lenox Mall, and that's a long way. *tips hat to [livejournal.com profile] bitterchris*

Marketing works way too well on me. But on the other hand: they're changing the official ball for the NBA! It's synthetic now, instead of leather, and you can get it online! And I had this sudden urge to go buy a basketball! (Since when do I play basketball? Maybe I should...)

Also: my journal is, more or less, a frontend to metafilter.
