Oct. 6th, 2006 01:38 am- Paul Rusesabagina. The real man behind the actual story slightly fictionalized in Hotel Rwanda. He totally managed to save over a thousand people from getting genocided in 1994. Also, he came to speak at Georgia Tech! He was brilliant -- he got like three standing ovations. His takeaway points were (paraphrased): "If you want to know what someone is thinking, you should talk to them -- opening dialogue is really important for resolving conflicts" and "if you want the world to be different, young people, you've got to fix it." He made me and probably most people there want to learn more about African history and politics and figure out how to fix things. It's probably going to involve time machines and preemptively stopping European colonization of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries and the slave trade before that. Or maybe just improving education and public health.
