I'm startlingly, shockingly bad at chess.

But! Over at chessvariants.org, you can find out about all sorts of modifications to the game; it seems much harder if every time you sit down, the rules are slightly different. And the rules have evolved a bit, over history; particularly, there are closely related games that have been played in China. And Fairy chess pieces are nonstandard material that you might include in a game or puzzle... y'know, to shuffle things up. Many of them are listed here.

As a child, I wanted to play with Ninja Turtles instead of... something; maybe bishops? In my rules, they could go up to three spaces in any direction, unless there was something else in the way.

I was about to suggest a variant of chess where you can pick which fairy pieces you play with (and it doesn't have to be the same as your opponent's material, but say you have some sort of points system to keep it balanced)... but I suppose in the limit that comes out to be the same thing as miniatures wargaming.
