... speaking of winning battles...
Jul. 11th, 2007 07:00 pmToday was the last day for Lego Robots at camp for this week -- we switched over to working with Alice for doing 3D animation and games this afternoon. Which means that this morning was the robot exhibition and battle!
We had dance robots (some that do a floor routine, one that does a very convincing "the robot"), two soccer robots that do a pretty good job of finding a ball on the table and kicking it (really difficult!), and a whole bunch of battlebots, all constructed by kids in the 7th to 9th grades.
After some fierce (but very sportspersonlike) competition, the top three (of seven) were:
3) Panzer: a bulldozer-like bot with flat lego walls on either side and a menacing ram in the front, intended to spin the other robot around and push it out of the ring. Specifically designed to counter the approaches that were doing well in practice battles yesterday, so big engineering ups!
2) Pwnasaurus: a dead simple design, super-elegant. Low center of gravity, with some wheels sticking out in front, just off the ground. These spin backwards, so as to flip the other bot over. Defeated everybody in the whole tournament at least once.
Tha Winnah: Crushinator. Uses a long-but-sturdy front ram to upend its opponent and push them out of the ring. Heavy enough to be hard to flip, reliably tripped up the competition. Also features superfluous spinning lego "blades". Crushinator had the best record at the end of regular play, then took out the Pwnasaurus for the champeenship!
