wonderful media things weekend!
Oct. 5th, 2008 11:00 pmI was remarking earlier to Lindsey, that growing up around those Theatre A La Carte cats in Tallahassee, I probably have an unusual view on musical theatre -- my expectation is that over the course of the show, at least a few of the main characters are going to have severe breakdowns.
On the way back up, flipping through NPR stations the whole way, I heard:
- an interview with some of the editors from the Oxford English Dictionary, talking about how they find words, research their histories, and decide which ones go into the OED. They were really keen to emphasize that their job is descriptive; they're not out to change real language usage in the wild.
- right after that, an interview with a guy who took a year off to read the entire OED (he often reads dictionaries for pleasure), then wrote a book about the experience.
- a game show wherein people competed with their knowledge of relatively obscure words and phrases, then played some Balderdash
- A program about psychology: this week, they were talking about the health and health-care problems faced by people with mental illnesses. The mentally ill apparently die of all kinds of preventable things, often.
- Baroque music
