"Indiana, we're all for you!"
Feb. 14th, 2010 05:33 pmLast night, we went over to hang out with some folks over at Michael and Katrina's house. They're really great hosts. And Katrina cooked some delicious food. It seems like it must have been a lot of work; there was sort of a quiche with broccoli, and corn chowder, and salad and a cheesecake. And it's always interesting to talk to Michael (all of his vowels get pronounced; "mik-ha-el") -- he's lived in Russia, Israel (on a kibbutz!), and bizarrely, Alaska.
Also, we watched Breaking Away, which turns out to be a great movie. It's set in Bloomington, and often on the IU campus, and it's about people who live in the town and how they relate to the university and their own identities, especially regarding class issues. The protagonist is a local kid obsessed with bike racing, Italy, and Italian cyclists, so much so that he's trying to adopt an Italian identity (including the language!), no matter how everybody around him thinks it's weird. It's really pretty charming, and it's got some great dialog.
Oh! And it includes the IU fight song.
