Aw, one of my students wrote this, to nominate me for the "AI of the year" award.
Alex Rudnick has been the best AI I've had. He is the first AI I've had for a class, who has taken an interest in the students. He always makes the labs interesting and useful for understanding how to do the homework. He understands the material deeply, and he conveys his excitement effortlessly. This has been one of my favorite classes.
At Indiana, they say "AI" and mean "associate instructor", what you might call a TA at most places. My student isn't implying that I'm somehow more artificial than most people.

I didn't win the award! But I think I did a good job this semester anyway, and I was pretty happy to be nominated. Lindsey [livejournal.com profile] lindseykuper got nominated for the award too, and probably had a better case for winning than I did. She's like a maelström of pedagogy; she works so hard on being a good teacher. (contrast this with my pedagogical technique, which is basically to try to channel a lot of enthusiasm when I say: "hey! you should go read all the CS articles on wikipedia, many of them are quite good!")

Anyway. Having spent most of today grading the finals with my coworkers: some of my children has learned, and some of them has not learned so much. And it's pretty rewarding, helping people through the intro CS class. Maybe some of them will go on and become great programmers and computer scientists.
