I'm in Atlanta!

Mostly I'm here for NAACL, where I'll be presenting at SemEval in a few days!

But on Thursday, I spent pretty much the whole day driving from Bloomington to Tallahassee. It took like 13 hours -- I went through Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and then into Florida. I stopped for lunch in Kentucky, and at the Subway, there was a guy in khaki shorts and sneakers with a pistol strapped to his belt, just right there, like it was totally normal. (pretty sure he wasn't a cop) ... culture.

And I hung out with my family in Florida and it was beautiful! On Saturday, I did a little bike race with my dad. He just recently had some surgery on his hip, and this was his first semi-serious bike ride since then. Walking is actually still a little tentative, but he can ride just fine, apparently!

On Sunday, I drove up to Atlanta (a much quicker trip than Bloomington->Tallahassee) and hung out with Mark and Diana -- they put me up for the night at their place before the conference, and we went out for awesome Korean food!

Monday was the first day of the conference, and I went to a bunch of talks (like you would expect) and saw lots of friends from the NLP world, including-especially Google folks. Greg D and Greg H [livejournal.com profile] gregh1983 and Karl and Oscar and Els and GTranslate guys John D and Peng and Bob...

Also it's been nice to get to spend some quality time with my Indiana colleagues. Tuesday night, the Indiana folks and I went out for dinner at Green Sprout instead of going to the banquet at the World of Coke. Levi (from Indiana) especially appreciated the good veggie Chinese food, which is kind of scarce in Bloomington.

After dinner I headed to Octane for the traditional ATLhack, where I chatted with Mark and Vinny. We didn't hack really, but it was great to hang out with them -- I hadn't seen Vinny in a long time! He's been building hardware things and has a pretty wild business plan. HE HAS A PROTOTYPE.

This is not the complete story. There's more story actually. I'll write more.
