pump ups: Jack LaLanne

Jack LaLanne is the man. He's 93, and still works out every day. And he spent decades having a fitness TV show and doing ridiculous-awesome feats of strength like swimming long distances while towing boats, or doing a thousand pullups. (or, apparently 1033 push-ups. Jebus).

Here he is at 88. You never thought about working out your face, did you?

When I was little, I really wanted to be able to raise just one eyebrow. So I practiced for hours in front of a mirror. Eventually I was successful, and I just kept making different faces at myself and learning what they looked and felt like. I still will take a few minutes every couple of days or so to make funny faces in a mirror somewhere. Not only is this a good way to exercise your face, it's also a good way to learn your face and the expressions you can produce.

Some studies have even suggested that one's facial expression, to an extent, determines one's mood; it doesn't entirely happen in the other direction.

Somewhere I have a black and white photo of me at about 4 years old, in front of a B&W television. Jack's demonstrating an exercise, and I'm following right along, doing the same leg lift thing that he's doing. This would have been taken around 1958. My mom or dad probably snapped the picture. Jack IS the man! He's spent a lifetime encouraging people to be fit.

Loved the pictures of you guys on the Oregon coastline!
