about to go to Tokyo for work!

Feb 2015: a young man of Jewish extraction hops across the ocean with his German coworkers to meet up with their Japanese coworkers, in Tokyo. They will discuss various planned improvements to a computer program capable of translating between every single human language that has more than 100 million speakers.

His pocket supercomputer will immediately allow him to stay in contact with his friends and family, with no particular prior arrangements.

... this is an OK future, in a lot of ways.

Will it? I wouldn't expect US phones to work over there, it's their own version of CDMA AIUI. Not counting wifi, of course.

Apparently yes (http://www.t-mobile.com/optional-services/roaming.html)!

I mean, we'll find out. But they say it will! And it worked like a champ when I was in Iceland, so I'm inclined to believe them.

Iceland probably uses GSM, like the rest of Europe, the same as T-Mobile and AT&T use. Hrm, reading that page, I wonder if it's a case where 3G or 4G work in Japan, but 2G wouldn't...

Confirmed! Replying on telephone, from airplane. \m/

Confirming just that it works, or my hypothesis about only the higher modes working?

Enjoy! (Damn, it's warm in Tokyo for February. Unlike Hothton.)

And perhaps this young man will leave his non-helpful advisor in the dust regarding the fulfillment of his dream to allow people of any background across the world to exchange ideas with one another

Yeah would indeed be a pretty heartwarming reverse-timecapsule message for someone living like 80 years ago.
