alexr: "Would it be possible, do you think, that I could get on one of these projects [0]?"
goel: "Oh, absolutely... sorry I haven't answered your email yet [1]. I'll send you some papers to look at today."

[0] "these projects" refers to Ashok's Interesting AI Research Projects, which involve case-based systems and metareasoning... programs that remember past problems they've solved and/or think about their own models of themselves.
[1] I sent him email asking him to send me papers, so I can know what he's doing, presumably so I can get involved with a more interesting-rewarding-awesome research team.

...what's with the odd footnotes recently? Please don't turn into Terry Pratchett. :(

And yay for better research. :D

It's something that Sean [livejournal.com profile] schizobovine does, and I kinda like it... would that be so bad if I was more Pratchett-like?

Yay indeed, probably :)

...yes? Only because Pratchett is in love with the sound of his own footnotes. They're funnier when used sparingly, and when kept short.

*uses pedantic T.S. Eliot icon to prove point!!*

Dude, do not knock the Pratchett. His footnotes are often funnier than entire books. [0]

[0] Especially the one about the Librarian having an extremely tidy mind. [1]

[2] Dangling reference.

Having read Pratchett, I'm afraid I'll have to disagree. I think I'm one of the .02% of the population who doesn't think Pratchett is all that funny. *shrugs*

I'm not saying that Pratchett is entirely bad, mind -- Good Omens is one of my favorite books. I just don't think getting slaphappy with the footnotes to the detriment of the flow of the narrative is a technique that ought to be imitated. Footnotes are like parentheses, but worse.

Don't feel too bad -- I posted assuming that I was in the minority that liked the irreverence to linear narrative that TP is so good at.
