All sorts of Important Stuff!
Jul. 27th, 2003 01:10 amThis is a semi-boring entry. It's mostly for my own records, just in case I ever go back and wonder "... what did I do on that particular day?" If you don't feel like reading about the silly minutiae of my mundane life, then just click on this link and know that it's a picture of a tshirt that I'm wearing as I type this.
Hrum, it's been a while since I've updated... you know what this means -- oh yes, believers, it's time for one of those long, rambling "Alex dumps out the entire contents of his skull and relates the events of the past week" sort of entries.
The past few days seem like they've been really low-content, although I haven't been a complete bump on a log. Most of what I've been doing recently has involved comings and goings in Atlanta... I drove back on Friday afternoon, so I guess today's been my first full day back in town. So I will proceed to outline what I've been doing, since I wrote last, and then if I feel like talking about anything else along the way, then that'll get talked about.
Thursday Things: This was probably my most productive day on the trip... I woke up on the couch in the Apartment, got cleaned up and then set out with some Specific Objectives in mind -- administrative ones, mostly. It might be that I'm just not as creative or free and open and breezy as I'd like to portray myself, but I'm just happier when I have a specific list of things to do... some prime directive, some motivating force... something to be working towards. As it turns out, I was headed out to talk to various Tech clerical folks, so I could try to get my acme password reset (which I, sadly, had forgotten, but figured that it would be useful to have again -- that went down quite smoothly) and figure out what I needed to do paperwork-wise to get my FSU weight training class to transfer to Tech, so's I wouldn't have to take HPS1040, the dread Health Class. So I spoke with Allison in Student Services, who's always helpful (and the one who hires TAs), and she directed me over to the bowels of the Weber Building... where I found this one woman, whom I was supposed to contact, so's we could figure out the whole transfer thing.
It was interesting, showing up there, in that it wasn't interesting at all... she lived in one of the most stereotypical clerical sort of environments that you could imagine. Sort of a high counter up in front of this desk with stacks of papers and a few scattered pictures of her kids around, with a little light top-40 radio station playing in the background, just loud enough so you could make out which song was getting played... and a certificate of "Thanks for 10 years of loyal service" on the wall, dated 1993. This just struck me as ... well, really a horribly un-interesting sort of working environment, and it struck me that this woman had been doing this sort of thing for nearly my entire lifespan. She seemed nice enough, though, and fumbled through some webpages so she could find the necessary (boring) administrativa... eventually, I just offered to find and email her the necessary links. May she find peace and happiness and exactly as much excitement as she wants in life.
... and then about a day later, she sent me an email to inform me that the class didn't transfer... so I'm going to have to figure something else out in my Quest Not To Take Health At Tech. Apparently, you can test out of it.
That evening, we pretty much just hung around the Apartment, and it was Shannon's turn to cook dinner, and she made this lovely fried rice, which she was planning on making with chicken bullion and ham... but was super-nice and made a separate veggie pan. Yay! Later on, I sat out on the big ledge outside the living-room window, which overlooks the Curran basketball courts and read for a while, and we played a lot more Tekken Tag Tournament, which was a lot of fun. Tim got to be pretty good at that. Adrian from Resnet came over late in the evening, and a bunch of folks were going to play Alpha Centaurai, but I wasn't in the mood to do that, and I ended up just passing out (first curled up in an armchair, and then eventually on the couch in the living room).
Friday, not a lot went on. I woke up, hung around trying to get hackmode back up (which Tim has pronounced at least temporarily dead -- he thinks the video card is b0rked and that the machine won't boot without a video card -- I've requested that he try to find a cheap video card to get our server running again...) and took Ross and Phu to the Disco Diner and then drove back home in the afternoon.
Today, lessee... today, I slept in kinda late, for whatever reason... I suppose my body was doing odd-ish things from all that sitting still. Early on in the afternoon, though, Natalie came back from being a camp councilor at a Rotary youth camp for disabled (mentally as well as physically) kids... she was taking care of just one camper, who had some mental disabilities and apparently required rather a lot of attention...
We went to Walgreen's, where we found and purchased ($4 -- it was in one of those "3 shirts for $10!!" bins) possibly the Very Most Inane Shirt Anywhere. I really can't understand what would posess someone to make a shirt like this -- I mean, what's this possibly got to do with Tallahassee, and why would anyone possibly want to wear a shirt like this? Is this a commonly expressed sentiment? Are there that many people in the world who wear this? Would you, passing through Florida, pick this up as an Official Florida Souvenier For Somebody? Granted, I bought it, but ... eh.
... and of course, my first thought was "You know, I could wear this when I'm teaching the recitation..."
In the afternoon, I went for a run (about 40 minutes -- today I ran out to the I-10 on-ramp and back, instead of through the forest) and then went and lifted with my father, at Gold's. Very exciting.
Hrum... and since then, I've been puttering around, figuring things out like how to get my kernel to do DMA again (things are so much snappier when your drives are using DMA) and how to get the smartcard reader to work under Linux -- so expect a lot more digital camera shots from me in the near future :)
