Today, assuming all the room assignment confusions get worked out, I'm starting back in on the whole TA thing... and it may well be that I'm handling a class on my own. I'm pretty well excited about this. This is a chance to Do It Right, this time. Fresh start... unless, of course, I get some of the same guys back in my class again *laughs* I'm not seeing you in the class again, right Nick? :)
I've found the professor with the Best Classroom Manner So Far -- Dr. Charles Isbell. No exaggeration, I walked out of his class pumped up about learning about AI, and stayed that way for a coupla hours afterwards... he's amazing. He's this big, bald black guy with a deep rumbly voice who speaks Really Quickly, and his excitement and confidence are contagious -- he paces back 'n' forth in front of the class, turns around really suddenly. You can tell he's enjoying being there, and he actually likes teaching the class. He got everybody involved in this discussion about What AI Actually Is... and he did a Morpheus impression at one point. I applauded, and he bowed. He looks a bit like Lawrence Fishburne. His jokes were subtle, although sometimes he would just playfully make fun of students... and his attitude put off something like "Let's all learn this together -- it'll be work, but it'll be fun -- I hope you enjoy it, because this is what I love, and I want to share it with you guys."
... the professors for my other classes weren't quite as exciting... but anyway, I want to be able to do what Dr. Isbell does... if not in his particular field (machine learning!), then at least I want that classroom manner. There are way too many boring instructors out there. ... and classes with them suck. I don't want that for other people, because I don't want it for myself... if I'm going to be inflicting CS on people, then I'd bloody well better make it entertaining.
Also yesterday, I hung out with Rick (who went on the Study Abroad Trip To Spain) for a bit, which was interesting. He'd decided that he wanted to plug his playstation2 into the network so he could play games online, and we fiddled with that for a while (but didn't manage to make it work, even though Christian came along), and then we went for a little run. And we went grocery shopping, which was far more stressful than it needed to be.
