evening out
Oct. 14th, 2003 02:35 pmSo yesterday evening, Ross, Corey, Marty and myself headed out to see Kill Bill at the Lefont Plaza, which was a really cool experience. It's over by Little 5, and the theater itself is all small and indie -- it only has two screens, and the game room features such classics as Centipede and Defender and Ms. Pac-Man, and they get the more independent sorts of films... Kill Bill is pretty mainstream for them, I think. In that sense, it feels sort of like Miracle 5 from Tallahassee, only moreso... and they do Rocky Horror Picture Show every Friday at midnight :)
Kill Bill was amazingly cool. It felt... well, sort of like Pulp Fiction (not much of a surprise there, I suppose), just with the glamourization of Really Violent People and its glorious blend of surf and Japanese/Spaghetti Western music... ah, and the very first image you see on the screen is the text: "Revenge is a dish best served cold. -- Old Klingon Proverb". The film itself was unendingly cool, with sort of disjointed (but really well-presented) storytelling... you're not entirely sure what's going on at some points, but it all comes together soon thereafter, which I think is what he was going for. The characters and costumes are "hyper-stylized" (to use Marty's description) to the point that they toe the edge of absurdity... but it's Just Cool. Tarantino is a beast, and Lucy Liu can definitely pull off the freckles. And the violence is top-notch, and the flying body-parts and spurting blood manage to be ... well, they fit with the film. You don't want to laugh out loud.
Afterwards, we crossed the street to visit The Majestic diner, which is nearby and probably the exact perfect place to eat at around midnight, in that area of town -- it's... well, also small and indie. It looks like it's been there for a long time, all neon and chrome... and they have two varieties of veggie burger, if you're not looking for grease -- although they have plenty of that, too. Pretty cool :)
Definitely an entertaining evening :)
So today... more hanging around, working on the new hackmode server, running, reading... and just relaxing :)
