The worst way to solve a problem is fiddling-until-it-works -- you can expect not to learn anything particular from solving it. And if (when) it comes up again, you've got no general principle to work from, and you can only proceed by fiddling...

(of course, you could go and figure out what's Really Wrong. Or just get rid of the thing you're working with and start over again fresh...)

... it's not a great sign that this thought was brought up on my first day of working on this thing for Ron... it's a cool idea, but it seems like this huge hack that people've been working on mostly with that first method...

(but I like hanging out in the AI lab -- it's a little sad that they might move this machine up to my little spot in the edutech area... but I'm sitting at somebody else's desk, and he needs it most of the time)
