The Amen Break!
There's this fascinating video about the Amen Break, its history, and the issues surrounding sampling and remixing. How true is it that (like the video seems to suggest) that whole subgenres have grown around slicing up that one drumbeat? Are the drum noises you'll hear in old jungle, drum 'n' bass, early Squarepusher and Hrvatski all sampled from that one six-second clip?
Also interesting: dubplates!
The video ends with a quote from 9th circuit Judge Alex Kozinski: "Creativity is impossible without a rich public domain. Nothing today, likely nothing since we tamed fire, is genuinely new: Culture, like science and technology, grows by accretion."
Also: Alex Kuczynski is a totally different person from above-mentioned Judge Alex. She writes about cultural issues surrounding beauty and is apparently well-known-media-maven enough to have a tag about her on Gawker.
