running and getting hollered at
Nov. 1st, 2009 05:42 pmIt's pretty common for people to holler at me when I'm out running. I dunno if it's just me (maybe I look funny when I'm running? I do wear little shorts and silly shoes), or if this is common for people with my particular passtime.
Sometimes it's awesome! At least three times in the past few weeks, some young-ish skateboarding guys have yelled out "ya gotta want it!" That's a pretty good pump-up thing to yell -- I wonder if it's the same group of kids? And do they offer up encouragement to everybody who's out running?
Occasionally I get something like "It's too late to be out running!" (I run at night a lot). Also fairly innocuous, but strikingly common, considering the movie happened 15 years ago now: "Run, Forrest, run!". Although, I got that one more often when I lived in Atlanta.
Today, though, out of a passing SUV: "Hey, fag!" and "How's it going, fagot?!" ... I ... just don't know what to make of that. Did the two guys in the car plan to yell that at people while they were driving? Or was it spontaneous? Which is worse? I considered catching up with that car at the next light, but the opportunity didn't present itself. I'd like to get a minute face-to-face with these kids.
Cars are like the Internet; they give awful people a forum for being awful with relative impunity.
