Happy New Year, kids!

First off, congratulations to Christin [livejournal.com profile] scottique and Ross [livejournal.com profile] rheavatarin, who totally just got married, hoorays! *hugs and dances*

I'm back in Atlanta, after a long and restful trip home, where I hung out with the family and ran in the woods a bit and mostly just slept. Yay sleeping. I collected some links, too -- I know how you guys like the links. Oh yeah, and I'm on Facebook now. Hit me up! (many of you already have!)

- The Anosmia Foundation: Because approximately two to five million American adults suffer from disorders of taste and smell.

- James Lileks has this amazing page archiving all sorts of cultural oddities from the 20th century, little snips of advertising and strange interior design and comics and whatnot. It's beautiful. Particularly compelling is The Institute of Official Cheer, which contains The Orphanage of Cast-Off Mascots, Compu-Promo... and the rest of the site. (LinksFromMyMomFilter)

- In May 2004, metafilter residents considered what happens when people fight bears. What if you have a knife? What if the bear can use the Force?

- Around that same time, El-P put out an experimental electronic jazz album. And there's new stuff coming out from him soon, look out! Also, apparently Aesop Rock has been collaborating with John Darnielle for his upcoming album? ...

- We should all be mathier. We should all be metamathier -- and science-ier, for that matter! Let's learn about Category theoryW and Automated theorem provingW and maybe in the latter pursuit we can make use of techniques listed in the University of Edinburgh's lovely Catalogue of Artificial Intelligence Techniques. (srsly, it's got like everything you could want)

Happy linkage, chirrens! May your 2007 be adequate in several exciting ways!

On People Fighting Bears:
True story, after the talent show Billings had a yen to go to Waffle House (Howell Mill). After waiting in line for a bit, we ate at two separate tables (Bill, Rob, Mark, Luke; Stuart, Kelly, me).

After we ate, on the way out, a guy named Brendan (from rural Massachusetts) with sideburns asked someone, maybe Mark if he thought a bear could run down a hill. The guy gave us a lecture on how bears joints aren't wired correctly to go down hills, so if you are being chased by a bear, it is your only chance to outrun the bear, by going down a hill. Also, the cute girl from the same group asked me where I got my "I heart destroy" shirt, because she heart destroying things too. True story.

Category Theory:
We talked about that at the pfunk meetings last year, but I never got to anything that I remotely understood. Let me know if you find something.

On Darnielle:
I found this on youtube the other day and it made me smile, and want to play the Athens Popfest.
