I miss everybody, but I'm hopeful that we'll all get to hang out soonish.
I don't think I mentioned here, but I left my job at Google in late August! Been hanging out and ambiently working on a few things and watching the kidlet since then.
Going to try to get a new gig soon. Hope it works out how I hope.
Take care of yourself; you're fine! These are hard circumstances. You are enough.

Date: 2020-12-12 10:51 pm (UTC)Mostly it was just time -- my patience for and faith in the company had been gradually wearing down for a long time. I liked my team a lot, but I wasn't getting to work on the particular stuff I wanted to work on. Also it was hard juggling a toddler when both of us were working as much as we could manage with (until late summer) no daycare.
It was just time to go.
I'll tell you what I want, what I really really want -- I want to do democratized machine translation for under-represented languages, and I want to teach. And selfishly, I want an office where I can close the door but also have people come visit me, filled with lots of books. So an academic setting seems like the right place.
So I'm now working on making this happen.
I might write more about why I left, maybe a longer post is coming.
