It's been a thoroughly entertaining visit to Home... all sorts of neat stuff.
I've been hanging out with the family and the Tallahassee friends, mostly. And sleeping a lot, and running, and reading, and pulling out the winter clothes for taking-back-to-Atlanta purposes...
Forest Meadows, the state park right across from my house with all of the lovely lovely trails, remains one of the coolest places in the entire world for running. I did two runs, each a bit over fourty minutes -- one was just looping around in the forest, but today (er, Saturday...), I went out through the woods, around the lake, out through Highgrove (a nearby subdivision), out to Thomasville Road, and then back through Maclay Gardens towards my house, which was excellent in so many ways. It felt wonderful to be out in the chilly Florida air... I didn't have a particular place I was running towards, and I didn't know how long I was going to be out... just picked turns to take and kept on going. It's so fulfilling, just getting out and running. Nothing better than that.
Particularly, I've been hanging out with Brett
zip4096, Garrett
lomonthang, Marko
wangosuave and Lloyd (who doesn't have an LJ yet, but we're trying to convince him)... and it's always great to see the former two guys, but I keep in pretty close contact with them online, and that's lovely... the latter two (particularly Markja), I hadn't spoken with for a while, but it was great to see them. Mark is still Mark... perhaps moreso, even. He's getting geared up for medical school, working hard at Dartmouth... and apparently not particularly pleased with the social climate there :-\ He looks pretty strong -- he must be working out.
Lloyd is still very much Lloyd (although I'd spoken with him a few times, fairly recently, so it wasn't that much of a gap in communications, I suppose... he just doesn't like to use computers or phones to talk to people, that much... *shrugs*) He's been offered LJ account codes, but it seems unlikely that he'll take us up on the offer.
*laughs* So tonight, as we were leaving from Garrett's new place, I'm trying to turn the Geekmobile around on this fairly narrow road, and I'm trying to pull into a driveway to do this. It's surrounded by this really steep underbrush-covered ditch, and it's about 11 at night, so it's quite dark... so obviously in the course of my attempt at a three-point turn, one of the front wheels ends up falling off the edge of the driveway, and my attempts at backing back out end up with the car at a 45-degree angle, with the back wheels barely touching the road. This was somewhat stressful... but I set the parking brake, Garrett and myself stepped out of the car to try and figure out what to do... and within minutes, a bunch of guys in a huge pickup truck show up, say something about how their friends are really drunk and need to be deposited at home so they can pee, but that they'll be right back to pull us out of the ditch. About a minute later, we hear the truck rumbling back towards us, and these guys (intoxicated, but nonetheless super-helpful) hook up this big thick chain to the back of the geekmobile and to the front of their truck, and with some squealing of tires and a coupla tries, we manage to get my car back on to the road, and everything was fine.
Kinda like that time at your house, Kelsey...
Apparently one of them was a Maclay graduate, and they said they've done this sort of thing at least ten times -- they feel it's their obligation, having a big truck and a huge chain, like that. Garrett suggested that this must mean I had a lot of positive karma built up... but whatever positivity I've been putting off has now likely been exhausted. Drunk UF-Fan Maclay Graduate Guys With A Big Truck, we salute you!
It's just good to be home. There's nothing better than sleeping and hanging out with friends and running in the forest and just being home...
Oh yeah... remind me to write about the drive home (and the Gospel of John, and how that relates), Anthony's friend Lauren, and hanging out with actual family members, next time... I've got things to say about that, but I'm about to go to bed.
... there's so much stuff to be done... oy. I should go to sleep so I can be fresh for tomorrow, in which I'll probably drive back to Tech and get in on it all...
