Oh, one of those days...

Some days, you wake up and pop off to meet Ashwin, and he seems to already have a project in mind for you to work on (because he's spoken with Kurt about you), and it happens to be one where he's working with researchers from Emory (one of whom happens to be his wife, the other Dr. Ram, who's a chemistry professor) who're building this system to teach people stuff with interesting projects (it's sort of Constructivist, if you're familiar with that -ism, like Alisa
tabandlow is...), and now they're planning on adding some AI components to it, like doing learning about the individual students and trying to measure their individual levels of understanding so as to tailor the system's output to them, or suggest that they work on different projects (partly by doing NLU on what they're typing at the system) and doing intelligent searches on stuff... and he's all ready for you to join up and start helping out with his group, all in a very friendly, flexible, you-seem-pretty-cool-so-let's-get-you-doing-something-interesting-so-you-can-become-one-of-the-AI-research-community-people-and-eventually-get-a-PhD-at-UC-Irvine-or-somewhere-like-that sort of manner.
... this is one of those days. *grins broadly*

And dude...constructivism is one of the better things on this planet. (Mom did her master's thesis on it, so I know more about it than I want to know.) It seems very much like your kind of thing. :D :D :D :D :D
Hurrah! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Date: 2004-03-31 11:34 am (UTC)I think I'd tend to agree, about constructivism being a Very Cool Thing. I have a feeling that you'd tend to be well-disposed towards it, given your Montessori background?
Yeah, for my first year and a half here, I'd worked with Amy (http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~asb/), who has a constructionist bent and tends to do educational-technology type things, and that was fun.
