Today's topic provided, in part, by the most excellent Postmodernism Generator. Few things in this world make me laugh quite as hard. Andrei Markov, I salute you!
*gradually stops laughing* Oh yeah... I was going to post about something...
Monday nights at the Masquerade, starting yesterday and continuing for ten weeks... there's a karaoke concert. So Mel
delamancha and I headed out there to get our respective grooves on... my setlist was my perennial favourite "Killing Me Softly" (which I /will/ sing on key one of these years...), "Because the Night" (10,000 Maniacs track), and "Salvation" (Cranberries). Mel, um, certainly didn't sing Harry Connick Jr's version of "It Had to Be You" and "Penny Lane". That's totally not the case. The karaoke area was populated mostly with a bunch of black folks, who all seemed to know each other, and were really friendly and welcoming... and really quite musically talented (with a few exceptions -- but everybody was having fun). Man, there's really nothing quite like a cultural predisposition towards having funk. The judge for the karaoke contest at the end (apparently a music producer of some sort, I forget his name -- he was top of cool) lovingly referred to Mel as "the vanilla child", which I thought was amusing.
So this is continuing for nine more weeks, and I fully expect you guys to come with me, like many many times, over the summer. Next time, I'm going to get all upons with the sole Bosstones track on the playlist ("The Rascal King")... and maybe some NIN... they had "Closer", oh yes :) And somebody's going to have to learn the Dr. Dre part to "Ain't Nothin' But A G Thang", because I've already got the Snoop chunk down, and a duet is in order.
*inserts tongue into cheek*
On a less cheerful note, the world is all gloomy and everybody's freaking out at the end of the semester, and any sort of epistemology seems deeply shaky, and the universe is aggressively people-agnostic. And nobody can communicate, which I've been positing is the deep-seated cause of most human problems. But I had a good chat with the Reverend Steve about all of this today (his wisdom is profound and his pretension is small), and that's good. I'ma hafta go read more Kierkegaard and suss things out.
Oh yeah, and I should be working on AI.
EDIT! Holy crap, the Postmodernism Generator doesn't work by means of Markov Chains like the haiku generator Lisa
pyrona had linked to recently does... it actually works by means of The Dada Engine, which uses a recursively-defined BNF-esque user-defined grammar! Backus and Naur be praised! (Brett, weren't you playing around with the Dada Engine like a million years ago?)
